Hamer van Hussen Groenendijk is the recent merger of 2 Rotterdam based marine
cargo survey companies, J. Hamer & H. van Hussen and Expertisebureau
Groenendijk. Both companies were established in 1969 and have been operating
successfully ever since.
Hamer & van Hussen was founded on 1 February 1969 by Jouke Hamer and Hans van Hussen. Some months later, on 16 May 1969, Cees Groenendijk Sr. started Expertisebureau Groenendijk.
Both companies were typical family owned companies, with multiple generations employed, backed by good teams of loyal personnel. The son of Cees Groenendijk Sr, Kees Groenendijk Jr joined Expertisebureau Groenendijk in end of the 70-ties and became director in a later stage. Wieger Hamer joined Hamer & van Hussen in 1991 and took over the company about a decade later. In 2010 Ben Groenendijk started at Groenendijk and continued the office some years later when his father died at a young age.
The 2 companies had more in common; besides location, age of the firms and
family history, the companies were both relative small in size, but specialised
in cargo claims. They both built up a good name in their own field over the
years and both mostly worked for underwriters and brokers, active in the
co-insurance market. And most important of all, the companies's cultures and
mentalities were very similar.
Later on we came to realise that already many years before, our predecessors were already considering a possible merger, but never shared that idea with one and other.
When we both existed 50 years, we decided to join in 2019 on 1 February 2019.
Initially each company kept working under their own well established name. After 2.5 years we experienced that the sum of both companies had made us both stronger. We therefore continued under the logical name Hamer van Hussen Groenendijk.
