At times we are approached by cargo underwriters or P&I clubs to inspect the condition (note: not the quality) of a cargo prior to shipment .
The purpose of such a pre-shipment survey is to establish the cargoes apparent condition immediately before it is loaded onto the vessel or stuffed into a container. We examine not only the condition of the goods, but also supervise the handling and packaging and various other circumstances that may play a role to minimise the transport or storage risk.
We have carried out a large number of pre-shipment surveys inside warehouses of export delicate goods (f.i. groundnut kernels), where a careful pre-shipment evaluation can be a valuable tool in accessing the risk and preventing claims.
